Cecilia Scott Biography
The Artist

I was brought up in the Sussex countryside, one of seven sisters who are all artists. We have given two successful art exhibitions together at The Gallery in Cork Street, London. Every year of my life I have spent time exploring the north Cornish Coast which I know well and love. I have passed many hours contemplating the sea in all weathers and seasons and particularly enjoy painting it. As a children we used to go to the Sussex coast for picnics, and I often revisit the huge white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, which are at the begining of the South Downs Way. I try to capture the drama of these great walls of chalk in my paintings.

I started my artistic career as a dress designer and silk screen printer, and ran a small, but successful business selling my designs to shops in Bond Street, and Knightsbridge in London, Edinburgh, and Ryad in Saudi Arabia. The bright colours and original prints were frequently displayed in shop windows.

Later I married Nick Scott the M.P. for Chelsea who became a minister in Northern Ireland. We had two children, and life became so hectic that I gave up working. So it was not until the children were older that I decided to take up the challenge of portraiture. I studied at South Thames College and have been taking portrait commissions for the last eight years . I go long distance walking in my spare time and I am so eager to record the dramatic sea and fascinating landscapes I encounter that I decided to pack a sketch book and do thumb nail sketches of the scenery. I use these as material for land and sea scapes which I finish in my studio in London. I was inspired by the recent Constable exhibition in London. I try to create space in my paintings, giving the viewer the illusion that they can step into the landscape.
